Stage one restrictions primarily involve limitations on watering lawns and reducing water...
If the Edwards Aquifer’s level drops below 650 feet, it will trigger stage two water restrictions, which would include more watering rules. If the level rises above 660 feet for 15 days, the city — advised by SAWS — will reconsider the restrictions, analyze the forecast and make a decision based on conditions.
San Antonio implements water restrictions because it must maintain the spring flow at the San Marcos Springs and Comal Springs. Endangered species, such as the blind salamander and the Comal Springs riffle beetle, depend on the aquifer and its springs for survival. Low levels in the Edwards Aquifer can decrease flow in the springs and dry out endangered habitat.
