San Antonio Express-News, Houston Chronicle win investigative award for coverage of Uvalde massacre

People visit the Town Square, the site of a memorial for the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, on Friday, May 27, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas.A national investigative journalism organization has honored the San Antonio Express-News and the Houston Chronicle for team coverage of the Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde.

The IRE award recognized five stories that brought to light significant new information about how the massacre unfolded, how the teenage gunman acquired his arsenal and how police bungled their response to the shooting, waiting more than an hour to confront and kill the gunman. Just hours after the massacre, Barned-Smith broke the news that the 18-year-old gunman bought two assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition the week before the shooting -- just days after he turned 18 and could legally make the purchases.

Contreras reported – and state officials confirmed -- that this was untrue: The teacher closed the door behind her, and the gunman was able to enter because the lock was faulty.
