S.A. businessman rejects claims that he hoarded profits from pandemic food aid program
CRE8AD8 owner Gregorio Palomino talks with reporters after he delivered the first boxes of food to the San Antonio Food Bank, Thursday, May 28, 2020., the San Antonio event planner who came under scrutiny for underperforming on a $39 million federal contract to feed needy families during the pandemic, has rejected claims of fraud leveled against him by his former partner in the venture.
“Plaintiff has obtained a substantial benefit from the settlement and release agreement in the form of $40,000,” Palomino’s filing states. “Plaintiff is attempting to obtain damages inconsistent with the settlement and release agreement.” Marks provided the Express-News with what appears to be a copy of the signed settlement with Brownell, along with a copy of what appears to be a check for $40,000 made out to Brownell on Dec. 31, 2020.
Palomino’s contract was one of the largest awarded in the first round of the program. The USDA was criticized for selecting CRE8AD8 and other companies with little demonstrated experience in large-scale food distribution.
