‘You need more law enforcement’: San Antonio City Council splits how best to cut crime
City officials will apply for as much as $6.25 million from the U.S. Department of Justice, which would be distributed over three years.
“We keep adding police officers and our crime statistics continue to rise. It is beyond time to pursue additional options to preventing crime,” said McKee-Rodriguez, who represents District 2 on the East Side. “We cannot do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.”City officials have pledged to maintain public safety spending below 66 percent of the general fund. The grant requires a match from the city’s budget.

Others council members have been vocal about wanting to increase the city’s police force as San Antonio facesDistrict 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda, who represents the far West Side, said she hears from residents who want more police presence.As the city’s population booms, crime follows, said Clayton Perry, who represents the Northeast Side.
