We chat with Wildflower star Samantha Hyde about her first feature film experience, how she built an unforgettable bond with Kiernan Shipka, and what's next for her career:
Wildflower, now out on digital platforms, is first and foremost a celebration of family in all its forms. Director Matt Smuckler was first inspired to craft a documentary based on his niece's experiences with her parents, and that project has since expanded into his fiction feature film debut.
Samantha Hyde: My amazing agents at KMR brought the project to me, and fortunately the fabulous Beach and Katzman casting team liked my tape. The first time I read the script, I laughed and cried. The whole audition experience was like a fairy tale. Samantha Hyde: Working with Dash was beyond special. He really took me under his wing and has become one of my biggest mentors.
To me, I was inspired by the fairytale feeling of the script and the Cinderella-esque quality that I saw in Sheila. But there were also moments on set working with the other actors that I discovered as we filmed them. The most valuable lesson I learned is that I don’t have to torture myself preparing for a role once I’ve already booked it. Because this was, as you said, my first film, so I rehearsed the script over and over and over. But what I learned from watching such experienced actors is that a lot of the real magic and best performances can only be discovered on the day. Of course, you still have to do your prep work. But you don’t need to agonize over it.
