Finnick's The Hunger Games death was a tragedy, and actor Sam Claflin agrees. However, the victor's sacrifice made an important point to the Capitol.
Actor Sam Claflin, who played Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games, shared that his character deserved a better ending in Mockingjay Part 2, but it was really perfect for his overall character arc. Finnick's death was a devastating blow in the books, even more so when brought to life in the movies.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When Katniss first met Finnick, she was already familiar with his reputation. He was notoriously brutal in his Hunger Games, and as a District 4 tribute, he was considered one of the despised "career" clans. Since his Games, he had become beloved by the Capitol since his heart-throb good looks made him highly desirable.
Though the Hunger Games movies cut most of Finnick's sad story, the books explain that after the victor won his Games at only 14, President Snow began selling his body to wealthy Capitol citizens. Just as Katniss and Peeta were presented to Snow's people as star-crossed loves, Finnick was dangled in front of the Capitol like a desirable commodity. If he tried to resist, his loved ones would be killed.
How Finnick's Hunger Games Death Made The Stakes Even Bigger Finnick's death was an impactful reminder of all that the District rebels in The Hunger Games were fighting for. But, there was a secondary reason why it was so crucial to the conclusion of the politically driven plot. The Hunger Games books and movies established right from the start that many of its characters would die since the whole point of the Games was that only one person could walk away alive.
Unfortunately, Finnick's death reminded audiences that the stakes were very high in Katniss' rebellion. The war may have involved teenagers and kids, but it was far from watered down or childlike. When Finnick sacrificed his life to save Katniss, it reminded audiences that anything could happen. No one was safe, no matter how much of a favorite they had become.
