A surge of online donations pushed the Elgin Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign more than $27,000 over its $240,000 goal, officials said.
They were only a few hundreds dollars off that goal just through in-person donations at kettles set up through the Elgin area, but the donations made through the Salvation Army website to the Elgin corps made a huge difference, Capt. Rich Forney said.
Officials had been worried a shortage of volunteer and paid bell ringers would make it difficult to collect what they needed. The Salvation Army says manned kettles always receive more donations than those without someone ringing a bell and talking to passersby. Despite achieving their goal, the hope is people will continue to donate, Forney said. Many corps in the Chicago area are far behind their goals and need help, he said.
