The noted choir on Friday will perform the world premiere of Amy Gordon‘s work
Since its founding in 2009, the vibrant San Diego choral group Sacra/Profana has championed living composers. How better to close its first full season since the March 2020 pandemic lockdown than to present “Songs of Hope in Strange Times.”
“Obviously, I would not choose to have a week,” Gordon said with a laugh. “But I love those challenges. It was awesome to have any sort of commission discussion during that time when there was nothing — no performances and people were still learning the word Zoom. Friday’s concert will be the world premiere of the complete “Songs of Hope in Strange Times.” Acosta will conduct.The choral community arguably was hit harder than others in the performing arts world. Sacra/Profana’s roster changed slightly. Each concert still involves 20 singers, with about 15 more on call.
He’ll lead the choir in “Expecting The Main Things From You” by Nico Muhly, a composer who works with both classical and pop musicians. Oberoi, now living in Medway, Mass., usually conducts Sacra/Profana twice a year.
