Sabah may soon have its first heart centre as well as nation’s first autism-focused school, according to State Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib.
He said the motion, in principle, has been approved by the State Cabinet with the idea favoured for expediting by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. “It’s important that Sabah has its own heart centre. There are only 50 beds for heart patients at Hospital Queen Elizabeth 2 yet there they are handling more than 100 patients at a time.“Because of this overload, patients are being transferred to other floors. This puts a strain on our health workers. Peninsula has many and even Sarawak has one.
He said he would soon be leading a delegation to an autism-focused school in Singapore to study the operations and produce a cost estimate for the one proposed in Sabah.“More children and adults are being diagnosed with autism. I have three in my extended family who have autism. It happens regardless of an urban or rural life. “Let’s face it. Most Sabahans are not high-income earners. Sending a child to a special needs school would cost around RM3,000 to RM5,000.
