Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal proposes creating a major wildlife park in Sabah, modeled after the Serengeti National Park in Africa, to protect endangered species. He criticizes the potential privatization of the Bornean Elephant Sanctuary, emphasizing the importance of public management and long-term planning for conservation efforts.

Sabah should consider creating a major wildlife park modeled after the Serengeti National Park in Africa to safeguard its diverse endangered animals, according to Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. \He suggested that Sabah could replicate the Serengeti 's success, which encompasses thousands of acres dedicated to both tourism and preservation.

Shafie, the state's opposition leader, made this statement during a Chinese New Year walkabout at the Lido marker in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday (Jan 25). \The proposal arises from concerns raised about state Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew's suggestion to explore privatizing the Bornean Elephant Sanctuary in Lower Kinabatangan. Shafie emphasized that wildlife is an integral part of Sabah's heritage, and privatization poses a threat to this heritage. He expressed worries that privatization could undermine wildlife conservation efforts and erode public trust in the sanctuary. Shafie stressed the importance of long-term planning and public management for the conservation of Sabah's endangered species. He recalled that during the Warisan-Pakatan Harapan administration from 2018 to 2020, he designated 30,000 hectares in Sabah's central Telupid district as a sanctuary to protect wildlife, including elephants and orangutans. He also highlighted that Japanese donor Saraya Corporation had acquired a substantial land area in the vicinity to support the state's wildlife preservation efforts. \'He came to my office and said, 'Please preserve this land for wildlife.' That's the kind of commitment we need—land meant for conservation must be protected, not handed over to private entities,' Shafie emphasized. Notably, Saraya Corporation recently pledged funds up to RM1 million to the state government for an elephant food corridor project in the Lower Kinabatangan region, aimed at mitigating human-elephant conflicts
