KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Health and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung has called on the public to donate blood during this festive season to overcome shortages in blood banks.

He said on average, blood supply would drop to 20% during festive months like Ramadan, Chinese New Year and the school holidays.

Poon, who was previously the Sabah Youth and Sports Minister, took over the health portfolio following the passing of Datuk Stephen Wong."Every month, we need a minimum of 6,000 pints of blood, out of which 2,000 pints go to thalassemia patients. "I was made to understand if you are a frequent blood donor, the hospital also takes note of your contribution and gives you some privileges for treatment should you seek them in future, so you also benefit," he added.

"As a government body, we need to think out of the box and resolve this issue of blood supply shortage during festive seasons," he added.
