Sabah govt approves 10-year plan to conserve elephants

The plan, for which the state government has allocated RM20 million, comes in the wake of the deaths of at least six pygmy elephants late last year and early this year. He outlined the objectives as stepping up protection and stopping the killing of elephants; enhancing habitat connectivity and permeability; ensuring best practices in the management and ex situ conservation of elephants; and researching, monitoring and predicting elephant population trends.
An Endangered Species Conservation Unit will also be established to monitor the implementation of all action plans for terrestrial species fully protected under the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, he said. Jamili said the extinction of the elephant is not a major problem or issue in the state because the elephant population is healthy and the elephant habitat in the state is large and protected.
Jamili said Sabah is in a good position because, unlike elsewhere, there is hardly any loss of human life as a result of elephant attacks.
