South African referee Akhona Makalima has set a high target after receiving the Minister's Excellence Award at the South African Sports Awards. SLSiya Read more:
Makalima has broken boundaries in the football fraternity as a female referee and has received recognition from Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
"For me, this award means working hard without expecting to be recognized as a woman. says keep working hard because you will never know who is watching. I always tell my team to treat every game like it is your last game. Always give 100% and it is really an honour for me to be recognized," Makalima told the media. With the FIFA Women's World Cup coming up next year, Makalima has set her focus is on working hard to be part of the team that will officiate at the tournament.
"I have to raised my hopes high because I am on the list. I have to work harder for the final call to come, so it means I must consistently set myself up above the rest. It is something I want to achieve," she added. "Whenever I see Victor Gomes and Zakhele Siwela, I am inspired. Whenever I go outside the country, I call them for advice because they really inspire me."
