Discussing the recently-triggered full-scale war between Hamas and Israel, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor stated that both parties broke international laws by ‘targeting non-combatants’.
JOHANNESBURG - The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, condemned the actions of both Hamas and Israel in the ongoing conflict.
Thousands of people have been killed in Palestine and Israel since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel earlier in October, triggering a full-scale war with Israel retaliating. Pandor participated in the United Nations Security Council debate on Tuesday, discussing the situation in the Middle East. She stated that both parties had broken international laws.
"The killing of civilians and destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza by Israeli forces goes against the tenets of international law, which prohibits the targeting of non-combatants," she said. "This, of course, does not detract from South Africa's concern at the actions of Hamas, which also targeted non-combatants.""Most importantly, we call on all parties to exercise restraint and to desist from fuelling this patently unjust war and suffering of innocents."
