SA Premier Peter Malinauskas hailed it a momentous day as a special Sunday sitting approved a 12-person Indigenous Voice to SA parliament.
Since Federation, there have been 19 referendums proposing 44 changes to the Constitution and only eight have been carried. Should the referendum be defeated, a fallback position for Mr Albanese is to legislate for a Voice to the national parliament.Special sittings of the lower and upper houses of SA parliament on Sunday morning approved the historic Voice, which became law after Governor Frances Adamson signed off on the final paperwork just before midday.
A strict gender balance component requires an equal number of males and females to be chosen in both the initial 46 members and the 12-person Voice group.
