The food collected by Fridge Restock Community is enough to feed about 1,500 families each week.
Mr Daniel Yap, founder of Fridge Restock Community, received the National Environment Agency's EcoFriend Award in September for his food rescue work.
It took about three months before he finally persuaded the first RC – at Block 508B Yishun Avenue 4 – to start a community fridge, to which he would supply such food, in 2018. “More companies are also reaching out to work with us for their corporate social responsibility initiatives. We had just over 10 CSR partners in 2022 – now we have about 20.”
Mr Yap’s journey in rescuing food began in November 2017, when he spotted two people rummaging through the bins of his shop, Yihong Minimart, in Little India. “I was already donating my unsold vegetables to a nearby temple, but I still had a lot left over. So I told them I would set aside some vegetables for them to collect each week.”
