Ed Lamm, 100, landed on Okinawa soon after more than 250,000 soldiers on both sides died in bitter fighting on the island.

Arriving in Okinawa, he prepared for battle and repaired planes through the night — atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lamm celebrated his 100th birthday on June 1 and is one of two centenarians in an area veteran’s breakfast group.
He’s one of two centenarians remaining in the breakfast group after the recent passing of Alfred Dietrick Platt was on the ground floor of World War II, while Lamm was there for its grand finale. The bomb, Lamm knew, “was a terrible weapon,” but like millions of other American troops he had no way of knowing its destructive power.Still, he was relieved the war had suddenly ended and he'd see home again.
