Saskatoon Diving Club's Rylan Wiens is shooting for a second Olympics, with a different set of goals this time. yxe

Their world-championship medal was Canada’s first in the event.

Wiens is preparing for next month’s worlds in Fukuoka, Japan, and there’s lots on the line. Divers can earn an Olympic berth for Canada with a top-12 showing in individual, or top three in synchro. “He should be healed and ready to go ,” Carroll said. “The biggest thing is the last nine years of his training. He has to rely on that right now, because he’s had five weeks off. I think he can. It’s not the ideal preparation, heading into the world championships, but I still think he has it in him to do very well and get our spot for Canada.

“We’ve been doing stuff outside — exercises, mental visualizations, watching myself dive,” he said. “Trying to mimic the feeling in my brain of doing the dives, so when I get back it’s not a foreign experience. I’ve been working on what I can, even though I haven’t been in the pool.” “I don’t know if it’s because he’s an Olympian, or because he’s an adult,” she said. “They both happened at the same time. But it’s really nice. I’ve coached him since he was eight, and it was always me dictating absolutely everything — telling him how many, and what and exactly what to do. Now, it’s a collaboration. It’s a partnership.Article content
