Ryan Reynolds says an emotional scene in TheAdamProject is very personal to him, having a real-life connection to the time when his father passed away.
Ryan Reynolds recently shared that the personal tragedy of his father's death inspired an emotional moment in his new film, The Adam Project. Reynolds and director Shawn Levy recently worked together on Free Guy and are planning to develop more movies together in the future. But where Free Guy was a riotous action jaunt into the world of video games, The Adam Project features more emotional gut-punches throughout its sentimental time travel plot.
The science-fiction Netflix film sets Reynolds up as time-travelling pilot Adam Reed who, after crash-landing back on earth in 2022, meets the younger version of himself, played by newcomer Walker Scobell. The two then join up to find their father, Louis Reed in order to prevent the invention of time travel.
"There's a line in there that is from my real life, which is that 'boys always come back for their mamas.' And that's very true when my dad passed away. I'm one of four boys and it was just like this circling the wagons around my mom. We really all came back for her in a way that I know was incredibly meaningful to her. And to this day she still talks about it."
Reynolds' real-life experience was not the only one of the cast members' to connect with The Adam Project's story. Garner explained how she identified with being a mother to a pre-teen boy, as she is currently living that reality with her 10-year-old son. The actor shared that the initial phone call in which she and Levy discussed the concept of her character meeting her grown up son, "just destroyed [her].
Grief and forgiveness are powerful subjects to explore, and adding the densely complex idea of time-travel into the mix can certainly create a potent potion of sentiment. Time travel-based films such as the Back to the Future franchise have long served as a prime example of this.
