A Rutgers star has been named the Big Ten's offensive player of the week.

Monangai continued his strong start to the season against the Hokies, rushing for a career-high in touchdowns and 143 yards on 16 carries . His 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter — the longest by a Scarlet Knight since the 2020 season — ended a Virginia Tech comeback comeback attempt, then he put the final nail in the coffin with a 12-yard score with five minutes to play.

It marked the second consecutive game Monangai passed the 100-yard mark on the ground, becoming the first Scarlet Knight to do so since 2016. His 357 rushing yards through three games leads the Big Ten. Monangai is playing the best football of his college career thus far, exceeding expectations many had for him when head coach Greg Schiano convinced him to come to Piscataway out of Don Bosco.

“I’ve had a crazy journey to get here,” Monangai said. “I’m thankful for each step of the way. I never lost faith in my own preparation. I’m very confident in the work that I put in. The confidence comes from knowing that I put in the work. Going back to high school, I’m thankful Coach Schiano and the staff saw that in me and saw the belief that I had in myself.
