Rutgers holds on in win over Northwestern as Cam Spencer comes up clutch once again
The Scarlet Knights led for most of the first 35 minutes, withstanding a trio of comeback attempts from the Wildcats throughout that span. The hosts would eventually break through with less than five minutes remaining, going on a 10-0 run to go up 53-52 with 4:30 to play.
The Loyola-Maryland hit the game-winning three-pointer with 15 seconds to play, the highlight of a team-high 21-point performance on 7-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-7 on three-pointers. Spencer has hit 19 of his last 30 three-pointers across his last five outings, including two game-winning three-pointers.In a battle between the two best defenses and two of the worst offenses in the Big Ten, Rutgers proved why it entered the game better in both categories.
Rutgers took first lead and led for most of the first 35 minutes, hitting eight of its first 14 shots. Northwestern came out strong following the break, twice cutting Rutgers’ lead to two points within the first three minutes. The Scarlet Knights would respond each time, first through a lay-up from forward Mawot Mag and then back-to-back three-pointers from Spencer.
