Russian scientists have criticized the efforts to clean up an oil spill in the Kerch Strait, saying the operation lacks sufficient equipment. Two Russian oil tankers, the Volgoneft-212 and the Volgoneft-239, were involved in an accident on December 15th, with one sinking and the other running aground. The spill has resulted in thousands of volunteers attempting to remove oil-soaked sand from beaches, but scientists say the lack of heavy machinery is hindering the cleanup process.

Russia n scientists criticised Wednesday the effort to clean up oil that has washed ashore from two oil tankers, saying it lacks sufficient equipment.

The strait separates southern Russia from the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. Danilov-Danilyan is the scientific head of the Water Problems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and served as Russia's environment minister in the 1990s.“While the bags wait to finally be collected storms arrive and they end up back in the sea. It’s unthinkable!”Up to 200,000 tonnes of sand may have been contaminated with oil, Russia's minister of natural resources said on Monday.
