Putin signs decree appointing ex-head of tax service Mikhail Mishustin as prime minister after parliament's endorsement.

The Russian parliament overwhelmingly backed President Vladimir Putin’s surprise choice for prime minister yesterday after what one daily called a “January revolution”, a major political overhaul that some say could set Putin up as a leader for life.

His elevation is part of a sweeping shake-up of the political system announced by Putin on Wednesday, which led to the resignation of Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister along with his government., 67, scope to extend his grip on power once he leaves the presidency in 2024. He has dominated Russian politics, as president or as prime minister, for two decades.

Yesterday, Putin held a meeting with a working group he set up to consider his proposals. He gave it around a month to finish its work, Russian news agencies reported.“It’s clear to everyone that everything is going exclusively towards setting Putin up to rule for life,” he wrote on social media.had too much to lose by giving up power altogether.
