ICYMI: Russian items being pulled form Sask. stores, Ukrainians collecting items to ship home
The 28-year-old Regina man said he has contacted the Ukrainian ambassador to Canada to express his willingness to enlist with the newly created International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine and fight for his home country. The military branch is accepting applications from foreign volunteers who want to join the war against the Russian invasion.
“But since this conflict started, we’re done ordering anything from them for now, at least until this resolves, because obviously, it’s politically incorrect for us to do so because at the end of the day we are from Ukraine,” said Lytvynenko. Svitlana Grynenko is providing her nail tech studio as a space to hold all of the donated items until they are shipped to Ukraine. Grynenko immigrated to Canada with her parents eight years ago. She is originally from Sumy, and is constantly keeping in touch with family members back home.
Svitlana Grynenko is collecting supplies from donors to be sent to Ukraine on Monday, February 28, 2022 in Regina.Grynenko has been collecting items such as diapers, baby wipes, formula, first-aid kits and blankets. She said she’s been overwhelmed by the number of donations being dropped off. Donations are still being accepted at Beauty Code at 2338 Dewdney avenue Room #10.
Saskatoon Co-op declined to comment further, but a spokesperson said the Russian products were mainly liquor. “We are shattered by what’s going on in the Ukraine. One of my girls at the till, her parents live right in the city that’s being bombed,” said Rodgers.
