An army private and her husband have been charged with espionage after allegedly seeking Australian Defence Force material with the intention of providing it to Russian authorities.
A Queensland married couple have been charged with espionage after the army private wife allegedly took non-declared travel to Russia and instructed her husband to access ADF material from their Brisbane home.
Authorities will allege the couple worked together to access ADF material “that related to Australia's national security interests”. “We allege they sought that information with the intention of providing it to Russian authorities,” Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw told the media briefing. The couple were arrested at their Everton Park home in Brisbane on Thursday morning and will face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
Commissioner Kershaw sought to ease concerns, advising no significant compromise had been identified. “It has the potential to impact on Australia's sovereignty, safety and way of life. It happens in the shadows and the daylight and I ask Australians to call the national security hot line on 1800123400 if they feel something does not seem right,” he said.
