will help defend the alliance against a resurgent Russia, but the Kremlin still poses a threat to democratic societies that soldiers and tanks can’t address, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said in an interview during a U.S. visit.
Through Russia’s power over global energy and food supplies, it can cause inflation and economic instability that ultimately unseats leaders at the ballot box, Karins said. It is a major challenge for vulnerable countries, he said.Russia is threatening peace and security in Europe and actually in the world as a whole,” Karins said by Zoom from Minneapolis, where he is on an official visit.
“The threat to all of us, to democratic well-being, is very real,” Karins said. “We have to understand that the threat is not only military. It is through energy and food.” He said that in his country, the government subsidized the cost of natural gas for winter heating for low-income households last year and plans to expand its support when winter returns. He faces elections in October.
“It’s a very insidious attack. It’s military in Ukraine, but the knock-on effects are very, very real,” Karins said, noting the high cost of gas in the United States as an economic and political challenge for elected leaders. “The short-term solution is social support for the vulnerable populations.”
