Russia to withdraw from International Space Station in 2024
Russian cosmonauts have mingled with astronauts from the United State on the space station since 2000, when NASA Astronaut Bill Shepherd and Russian cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev became the first crew to live onboard the station.
The orbiting laboratory orbits Earth 16 times every 24 hours, traveling through 16 sunrises and sunsets.NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei didn’t shy away from Ukraine talk with Russian cosmonauts in space Since 2000, astronauts from across the world have lived side-by-side in its modules, sharing tight sleeping quarters, two tiny bathrooms and a gym. It is a partnership of five space agencies from 15 countries, which collectively manage the station's upkeep.
NASA and its international partners have indicated they plan to keep the space station running until 2030. President Joe Biden's administration formally announced its plans to extend the station’s life in late 2021. The Russian space agency, however, had previously been been reluctant to make commitments beyond 2024.Nearly the size of a football field including the end zones, the station is set to be decommissioned by 2031 at the latest.
