Malaysia is witnessing a decrease in the trend of migration from rural to urban areas. The Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Region, Datuk Rubiah Awang, highlighted that this decline is evident in the statistics released by the Malaysian Statistics Department, which show a drop from 30 percent in 2020 to 20.4 percent in 2022.
KUALA LUMPUR: The trend of migration from rural to urban areas is declining, as data shows that the 30 percent migration in 2020 has decreased to 20.4 percent in 2022. Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Region, Datuk Rubiah Awang said this record is based on statistics released by the Malaysian Statistics Department in 2023 regarding the trend of domestic migration involving residents from villages to cities.
She said this also explains that the government is currently making efforts to improve the availability of basic infrastructure and social facilities to be comparable with areas in cities. 'The Ministry of Rural Development and Region is always working with various other stakeholders such as local authority committees (PBT), Village Security and Development Committees and the Federation to ensure that rural development is carried out competitively and meets the needs of the people. 'As for monitoring the availability of basic infrastructure and social facilities, it is done through the ministry's internal project monitoring system and the Myprojek system from the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU). 'In addition to that, we also take data from reports published by the Statistics Department such as the basic facilities survey report, My Local Stat and Malaysian Village Spatial Characteristics (S-CHARMs),' she said in the Senate here today. Earlier, Senator Datuk Koh Nai Kwong asked the ministry to state the trend of migration of residents from villages to cities and vice versa, since 2020 until 2024 and how the ministry assesses the adequacy of basic infrastructure and social facilities in rural areas to be comparable with urban areas. Further commenting, Rubiah also said that the Rural Development Policy 2030 is the backbone in implementing the rural well-being development program. 'Every year, the ministry holds a laboratory that focuses on what is focused on each year',
