Campese Ma’afu was named after a Wallabies winger and played 62 Tests for Fiji at prop - including four against Australia. He has a good insight about why Fiji can shock the Wallabies.
Fiji have worked hard to remove emotional peaks and troughs from their game and won’t be suffering from a post-Wales hangover when they take on the Wallabies on Monday morning , according to former Fiji stalwart Campese Ma’afu.
As his first name suggests, Ma’afu has a unique vantage point for the Fiji-Wallabies clash, after being born and raised in Sydney, and named after the great David Campese. Ma’afu’s father George, who moved to Sydney to play for Drummoyne in the 1970s, named his son after the Wallabies winger following his feats on the Grand Slam tour of 1984.
Having poured everything into claiming a major upset but come up short, Fiji had to play Uruguay four days later, and in a shock upset, Uruguay rolled the Fijians.“People say to me on the street, ‘Oh Fiji are playing well and the Wallabies haven’t picked a strong team’ and all that. But I always say I have been to three World Cups and the one thing I can say is at World Cup time, it is anyone’s game,” Ma’afu said.
“Emotions is one of the things they have worked hard on, to take emotion out of the game,” Ma’afu said. “The game can’t be played on emotions anymore, and Fiji was like that for a fairly long time. They were a fairly emotional team and they used to strive off finding the motivation through the emotion.
