US Secretary of State Marco Rubio anticipates a deal to leverage Ukraine's mineral resources, partially offsetting US expenditures on weapons aiding Ukraine's defense against Russia. This move aims to secure a long-term economic interest in Ukraine and partially reimburse US taxpayers. Rubio also emphasized the importance of 'bold diplomacy' to achieve a lasting peace.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his anticipation on Thursday for a deal regarding Ukraine's mineral wealth, which would partially reimburse the United States for the billions of dollars spent on weapons aiding Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion.

In a statement following President Donald Trump's phone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, where the US administration indicated Ukraine's potential territorial concessions, Rubio emphasized the United States' vested interest in Ukraine's long-term independence. \'That should be anchored in an ongoing economic interest,' Rubio stated during an interview on the conservative radio show hosted by Clay Travis and Buck Sexton. 'Hopefully, we'll have some news here soon on that: the ability to partner with Ukraine -- a joint venture, or something like that -- for their mineral rights, all the natural resources they have,' he elaborated. 'Some of that money will go back to pay back the US taxpayer for the billions of dollars that's been spent there,' Rubio further added. 'Part of it is going to be reinvested back into Ukraine to rebuild (from) all the destruction that's happened there.'\Furthermore, Rubio engaged in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga on Thursday. Sybiga has voiced concerns that Russia is attempting to fragment the world along similar lines to the Yalta conference, where Soviet, US, and British leaders deliberated on the postwar balance of power. According to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, Rubio during the call discussed 'bold diplomacy to end the war in a negotiated manner leading to a sustainable peace.' Trump, who has consistently criticized the financial aid provided to Ukraine since the Russian invasion, recently proposed that access to Ukraine's rare earth materials should be a prerequisite for continued support.
