The President of the NSW RSL is formally apologising to Vietnam War veterans after many were initially 'refused entry' due to the belief they didn't fight in 'a real war'.

abc.net.au/news/rsl-nsw-apologies-vietnam-war-veterans-treatment/102726786The president of the New South Wales Returned and Services League is issuing a formal apology to veterans who were criticised and shunned by the organisation upon their return from the Vietnam War.

"I didn't experience that personally … however, I know that a lot of my fellow Vietnam veterans were refused entry to join the RSL movement," he said."I've decided now, as the RSL NSW president, to say sorry to my fellow Vietnam veterans." He says 4,800 Vietnam veterans have signed up to the RSL in NSW, but more than 8,000 are still not members. At the time, RSL members told Vietnam veterans they didn't fight in "a real war", Mr James said. When Des Davie returned from fighting in Vietnam, he was greeted by abuse from anti-war protesters and the media.

"That was just the last thing that veterans needed when they came back from a war zone," Mr Davie said. But Mr Davie says the treatment of Vietnam veterans has improved significantly over the years, and many will be happy to accept the apology from RSL NSW.
