Tracy D. Thomas Jr., 34, was charged with first-degree murder by the state’s attorney’s office Wednesday in Waukegan upon learning from the medical examiner’s office the child sustained multiple injuries from an assault.

The child died Feb. 25 from his injuries, according to the release. Thomas surrendered to police the day before after a warrant was issued charging him with aggravated battery to a child and aggravated domestic battery.

Unable to post the cash portion of his $500,000 bail, Thomas has remained in the jail since. Steve Spagnolo, a spokesperson for the state’s attorney’s office, said the child died at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge prompting an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in the release he appreciates the work of detectives of the Round Lake Beach police department, forensic investigators and advocates of the Children’s Advocacy Center for their help with the case.
