With two injured QBs, RB Roschon Johnson ready for expanded role
Roschon Johnson delivered 189 total yards on 33 touches as Texas’ wildcat quarterback last year against Kansas State. The bruising tailback could be pressed into service under center again.AUSTIN — Roschon Johnson doesn’t think it wise to draw comparisons between what happened last year against Kansas State and what“I mean, the K-State game, we were in a whole other type of situation collectively as a team,” the Longhorns’ senior running back said Monday.
But for Johnson and No. 21 Texas , the situation heading into Saturday’s 7 p.m. tilt against UTSA is different than it was last November. “I think Ro naturally, that role is comfortable for him being high school quarterback,” Sarkisian said Monday. “Ro’s a unique person, and you guys know I speak very highly of him as a person. He's very dedicated to this program. And anything we ask him to do, he does it. Whether it's cover kickoffs, which he was tremendous at on Saturday , to blocking, to running, to playing wildcat quarterback. Whatever we ask him to do, he does it.
“I think he's more than equipped to handle the things we ask him to do in the wildcat,” Sarkisian said. “You know, we don't major in it. But the idea that we can get to it, I think is helpful for us as a football team.”Sarkisian will tailor his game plan to Wright’ strengths, utilizing the redshirt freshman as a game manager who can settle in behind a much-improved offensive line and hand off to an all-star group of running backs.
