Green Beret Ron Shurer, who was profiled in a 2019 Wall Street Journal story on the mixed blessing of earning the Medal of Honor, dies of cancer at 41
WASHINGTON—Green Beret Ron Shurer, who earned the Medal of Honor during a chaotic firefight on an Afghan mountain, died Thursday at the age of 41 after a long struggle with cancer.
Mr. Shurer was a Special Forces medic in 2008, when his team was ordered to helicopter into the Shok Valley, near the Pakistan border, climb 1,000 feet up a sheer incline and kill or capture a top leader of the Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin insurgent group.
