Like a Realtor, Rockies right-hander German Marquez knows what’s important: location, location, location.
he was mislocating his fastball too often last season, and also noted that he needs “more rise on the four-seam fastball and more sink on the two-seam fastball.”
So far this spring training, Marquez is meeting those goals. Tuesday night, he pitched four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and no walks against the Cubs.“I feel like I had been dropping my fingers a little bit.” A slight hamstring tweak slowed Marquez at the beginning of spring training but in six innings across his two Cactus League starts, he has not allowed a run while fanning nine and walking just one.Ryan McMahon, who has moved from third base to second to fill the hole left by Brendan Rodgers’ shoulder injury, is having an excellent spring at the plate. McMahon is hitting .333 and smacked his third Cactus League homer on Tuesday night vs. the Cubs.
McMahon has reached base safely in 10 of his 11 games and has hit safely in eight of 10 games in which he has recorded an at-bat. His .704 slugging percentage leads the Cactus League, while his 1.973 OPS is second.With the addition of the pitch clock this spring, the Rockies have an average game time of 2 hours, 39 minutes through 16 Cactus League games. Last spring, the Rockies’ average game time was 2:58, with 10 games coming in over three hours.
