CINCINNATI — As their season nears the midway point, the Rockies are crumbling — physically, statistically and in the standings.
Manager Bud Black, whose job is to keep the team together during one of the rockiest stretches of his seven-year tenure, is glad to have an off day on Thursday, and another one on Monday, after playing 33 games in the past 34 days. A number of key veterans in the lineup have been down and out for an extended period of time: right-fielder Kris Bryant , first baseman C.J. Cron , designated hitter/outfielder Charlie Blackmon and second baseman Brendan Rodgers , who’s been out all season.
During the rough stretch, the Rockies had to insert players such as infielder Coco Montes, corner infielder/DH Elehuris Montero, and Connor Kaiser into the lineup. Black said he would prefer not to have to force young players into action. The rotation has been particularly hard hit by injuries. No. 1 starter German Marquez is lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Antonio Senzatela will likely be out until August, and Ryan Feltner might miss the rest of the season.
