Next we board the bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital. Immediately on arrival we make for a nearby traditional tea ceremony in a Machiya, a faithfully restored wooden town house. When the itinerary says “ceremonial”, it isn’t joking. The kimono robing and tea preparation is lengthy, detailed and fascinating.
