Emmy and two-time Tony Award-winning actor Robert Morse, best known to audiences as Bertram Cooper on ‘Mad Men,’ has died.

As an actor, Morse was a bundle of energy, a bravura song and dance man and deft at comedy. His signature gap-toothed grin made him an impish foil for Walter Matthau in the 1967 sex comedy,, in which his character coached his best friend about how to cheat on his wife.

But it was onstage that he made his biggest impressions. His breakout role was J. Pierpont Finch, a go-getter window washer determined to climb the corporate ladder in the original 1961 musical,, which earned him his first Tony. He won his second in 1990 as Truman Capote in the one-man show,. On the non-musical front, he made his Broadway debut opposite Ruth Gordon as a grocery store clerk determined to live it up in Manhattan in the 1958 production of.

But he never reached the top of Hollywood’s A-list ladder. “I was not a leading man,” he blithely told thein 2014. “I did what I did, but I never could become a real big star.
