The Chinese New Year 2025 Special Operation saw a significant reduction in traffic offenses and accidents. Technical faults, particularly with brakes and tires, were identified as prominent issues.
A motorcyclist apprehended during the Chinese New Year (CNY) 2025 Special Operation at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza cited 'waiting for my new salary to replace the brakes' as his reason for the faulty braking system.
Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, the Director-General of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), stated that technical faults, specifically involving brakes and tires, were identified as among the most prevalent offenses throughout the CNY 2025 Special Operation conducted by the JPJ in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), and several other agencies. 'Technical offenses like using bald tires and brake failure are common issues detected during vehicle inspections,' Ramli said in a press conference during the CNY 2025 Special Operation at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza. 'These violations are observed not only during the CNY operation but also in other operations carried out by JPJ.' According to him, the operation, which commenced on January 20th and concluded yesterday, resulted in 107,014 summons notices issued for various offenses, representing a significant decrease compared to the previous year, which recorded 207,127 summons notices. Inspections of 429,423 vehicles during the operation period revealed 82,606 major offenses. Offenses related to vehicle licensing topped the list with 29,994 cases, followed by driver licensing (20,414) and technical offenses such as tires and brakes (15,610). 'During this same operation, 724 vehicles were impounded for various offenses, including the lack of road tax and valid insurance, as well as vehicles driven by foreign nationals without proper licenses,' he added. In addition, Aedy shared that the number of accidents during this Chinese New Year celebration witnessed a 10% decline, from 8,784 cases in 2024 to 7,882 cases this year. 'Fatal accidents also decreased by 41%, from 109 cases to 64 cases, while the number of fatalities resulting from road accidents reduced by 44%, from 117 to 66. 'This statistic demonstrates that the enforcement efforts and awareness campaigns undertaken by the government and enforcement agencies have successfully yielded positive impacts on road safety,' he said. Furthermore, Aedy added that during the operation, restrictions on goods vehicle driving (road ban) were also enforced for four days, namely on January 27th and 28th before the holiday, as well as on February 1st and 2nd after the holiday. 'A total of 21 goods vehicles were detained for violating this regulation, while 140 JPJ P22 notices were issued to drivers who failed to comply with the ban,' he concluded.
