The mining giant is breathing a sigh of relief - but it faces multiple investigations after searchers found a potentially deadly radioactive capsule from one of its mines on the side of a highway in Western Australia.

An emergency services search team has found a potentially deadly radioactive capsule belonging to Rio Tinto on the side of a highway in Western Australia’s north.was lost while being transported from Rio’s Gudai-Darri iron ore mineThe “needle in a haystack” find in a search area covering 1400 kilometres was made on Wednesday on the Great Northern Highway just south of the mining town of Newman.

The company was notified the capsule had gone missing somewhere on route on January 25 and alerted health and emergency services, which in turn launched a massive search.WA emergency services minister Stephen Dawson said that finding the capsule, which was sitting about two metres off the highway, was an extraordinary result.

Rio is holding its own investigation into the public health scare and also faces an inquiry by Commonwealth authorities.
