A 37-year-old detainee of Rikers Island climbed over a recreational fence and made a break for the shoreline before being apprehended
A Rikers Island detainee briefly escaped from the New York City jail complex on Thursday, leading to an extensive manhunt that ended with his capture, law-enforcement officials said.
The detainee, a 37-year-old male who hasn’t been identified, climbed over a recreational fence at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday and made a break for the shoreline, said Peter Thorne, deputy commissioner of public information with the New York City Department of Correction. An investigation is ongoing, he said.
