Rice farmers have pleaded to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to restore National Food Authority’s (NFA) regulatory powers to assure farmers of a sure market that pays higher while also assuring lower prices for consumers

Rice farmers have pleaded to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to restore National Food Authority’s regulatory powers to assure farmers of a sure market that pays higher while also assuring lower prices for consumersThe Mabandi Multi Purpose Cooperative in Pulong Bayabas, San Miguel, Bulacan, and the Federation of Central Luzon Farmers Cooperative have also asked the president to raise the farm gate price of clean and dry palay to P23 pesos per kilo.

“Not everyone gets to receive ayuda. Only those that are close to power. But when palay price is raised to P23 pesos per kilo at farm gate, that benefits all farmers,” said Atanacio Santos of the Mabandi MPC, adding that only 75 percent of farmers get to receive aid. According to Simeon Sioson, FCLFC chairman, the increase of palay to P23 per kilo already covers all costs of production including those for seeds, fertilizer, and irrigation. Farm gate price has dropped to P18 to P19 per kilo and even hit a very low level at P10 to 14 per kilo. This has caused huge losses for farmers and compelled many farmers to give up tilling their land.

But Danilo V. Fausto, Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. president, said NFA is not supposed to be profit-making like private companies. “NFA’s purpose is not to make a profit ,” said Fausto.
