We speak to Kandahar director Ric Roman Waugh about his new action thriller, reuniting with Gerard Butler, and how he found a culturally authentic approach to the story:
Gerard Butler is a man racing to get out of a hostile country in Kandahar. The film centers on Butler's Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative whose cover is blown in the midst of a mission and must fight his way through hostile territory in Afghanistan along with his translator to an extraction point in the eponymous city.
Ric Roman Waugh Talks Kandahar Screen Rant: I am very excited to chat with you about Kandahar. You and Gerard are on quite the winning streak together since Angel Has Fallen. One thing I love about Kandahar is, much like Greenland, rather than sensationalizing what's going on around them, it really focuses on the characters at the heart of the story.
We had to rewrite the script, and it made it more relevant than ever, because it really not only became about the "all is lost" mentality of somebody like Mohammed and these other characters, but for the operators and the warriors that have been fighting for 20 years. What was it for, if [it was always] this kind of conclusion. So, it became even more poignant to the subject matter and the emotional thrust that we wanted.
When Kandahar came around, it felt like the full package to me, because it took the mortal man, but made him a man of action. We never wanted Tom Harris to be an action hero, we just wanted him to be — yes, he has a special set of skills, he is a highly-trained individual and operator, but he is a man that dedicated himself to fighting the war on terror for 20 years, to the point he doesn't even know his own family.
That was the fun of it is that a movie of this scale gets banked on with Gerry and I's names, and then we're able to kind of not worry about the financial part of it, but just go find these really unique voices and people, with like Ali Fazal all out of India, who's definitely broke through and done American/Western cinema, but to really give him a unique lens on his own history, of the the fight between Iran and Pakistan.
I wanted to show the same thing about the humanity of the region, and one of the things of shooting in the modern-day version of Saudi Arabia is the culture clash going on between the ultra-conservative movement and the progressive movement. So, you're seeing a younger generation that doesn't want to live without culture, they don't want to work, pray and sleep, and that's it, they want other things in their lives.
