Subscribe now.The American defense giant Rheinmetall recently unveiled its new "smart" short-range air defense system called the "Skyranger 30." Displayed at this year's Association of the U.S. Army’s annual conference, the system is, as the company states, the future of SHORAD systems.

At around 10.5 tons in weight, the aerial defense platform is smaller than other SHORAD systems deployed by the U.S. Army. This is far lighter than, for example, the SHORAD-armed Stryker currently used by the Army. More importantly, Rheinmetall’s CEO Stephen Hedger toldthat being fully automated, the "Skyranger 30" is new. “People have not been thinking about SHORAD in a UGV capacity,” he said.
