“I’m just not sure you are ever going to win the league with a goalscorer like him,” said former United midfielder Paul Scholes in November, towards the end of Lukaku’s 12-game goal drought in all competitions. His double against Palace on Wednesday started United on their way to yet another victory as they set a club record for consecutive away wins, before he played an even more crucial role in the comeback victory over Southampton.
