The Orion String Quartet — L to R, violinists Daniel Phillips and Todd Phillips, violist Steven Tenenbom and cellist Timothy Eddy — perform in a Dallas Chamber Music Society concert at Southern Methodist University's Caruth Auditorium on Oct. 9, 2023.Not, to be sure, a farewell for the venerable local presenter, whose 79th season includes six concerts. But the Orion String Quartet was performing as part of its own 36th season farewell tour.
There was however sharp snap to the second movement’s explosion of dotted rhythms and sinister buzz to its tremolos. Fortissimos never lost control as too often happens with present-day string quartets.loud and searing, in ways ill suited to music from an age of horse and buggy — and physically impossible back when violin strings were still catgut, not modern steel. A considerably narrower dynamic range would have been truer to the music’s subtleties.
Adding the six movements of the Beethoven made heavy lifting for audience as well as players. Beethoven is pushing more expressive envelopes than Schubert, so the Orion’s dynamic contrasts here felt more organic. The second movement flew like the wind — to the point of feeling frantic — but the two middle movements were gently sprung. The harmonic ambiguities of the Cavatina were savored.— literally, “big fugue” — convincing.
