Without their chemistry, the latest film from director Chris McKay wouldn't have much to recommend it.
Yet all of this puts him in the wrong place at the wrong time as he ends up crossing paths with the Lobo crime family, headed by the cold-hearted Bellafrancesca and her ambitious but idiot son Tedward Lobo . Pursuing the family is a local beat cop, Rebecca , whose policeman father was killed by the Lobos and wants revenge. But she's thwarted by her superiors who are totally team Lobo. Awkwafina gets points for delivering a few funny lines.
Written by Ryan Ridley and Robert Kirkman and directed by Chris McKay ,"Renfield" promises to be sharper than it is. The jokes only occasionally land, the cop plot feels generic and the"John Wick" level of blood-drenched mayhem feels out of place with the movie's lighter moments. That's not to say there aren't some fun touches: the black-and-white opening, a riff on Tod Browning's 1931"Dracula" with Bela Lugosi that makes"Renfield" something of a sequel, is a hoot; and the spoofing of the recovery process that acts as a running thread through the film offers some chuckles.
But"Renfield," like so many contemporary action and superhero films, gets lost on its way to its conclusion amid all the effects. The good part is that"Renfield" is short; it only takes 93 minutes to get to that [email protected]
