🎭 Review: Fort Worth Opera’s world premiere of ‘Zorro’ stirs the soul, but tests your patience
With music and book by Héctor Armienta, ‘Zorro’ was presented at the Rose Marine Theater in Fort Worth.
It’s 1814 in Spanish-ruled California. Diego de la Vega — who later assumes Zorro as a secret identity — returns to his hometown, where injustice runs rampant. A tyrannical general imposes a harsh caste system that groups residents based on their proportion of Spanish blood. Historically, opera composers have tinkered with their works after opening night. Puccini, for instance, extensively revised, which opens the Dallas Opera’s mainstage season in February. Armienta certainly seemed amenable to suggestions, asking audience members before the performance to stick around afterward and share their thoughts.score is largely tonal, tuneful and accessible, with particular influence from Puccini. Recurring motifs represent characters or crucial ideas.
Of the supporting cast, mezzo Bridget Cappel as Toypurina, Ana Maria’s grandmother, needed to give her lines more urgency and direction. Soprano Gabrielle Gilliam as Luisa, a servant at Zorro’s family estate, and baritone Brandon Bell as Sergeant José Maria Gomez enacted their comic roles with panache.
