Opening night of 'Facets' shined a wide-ranging light on various Chicago dance traditions — all its facets, if you will.

It should be said that this pair, each with more than a decade on the Hubbard Street stage, has never looked stronger—never clearer than with “Georgia,” which asks a lot from any dancer allowed to do it. Conte created his signature duet in 1987 for the angelic Claire Bataille, Conte’s muse, with Ron de Jesus; Sandi Cooksey was a frequent second cast for Bataille, in 2018.
That leaves choreographers Randy Duncan and Rennie Harris to pick up the here and now, apparently, but the “Facets” lineup is one of legends, whose wide-ranging aesthetics are rooted in dance traditions birthed primarily in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
