The production looks great and the actors are solid but they are let down by the script
You might wonder, what was “The Jersey Lily,” half of the title in the production"Sherlock Holmes and The Jersey Lily" currently at The Alley? It was the nickname for Emilie Charlotte, Lady de Bathe, formerly married to Edward Langtry, who was born on the island of Jersey, and arrived in London in 1876. She became famous for her beauty and charm, as well as her roles as an actress and a socialite.
The thing with this play is that every time the “mystery” parts don’t quite add up, you say to yourself, “Well, this is supposed to be a fun comedy.” And every time things are not that funny, you say, “Well, this is supposed to be a mystery.” The entertainment quotient goes back and forth. It is the kind of script assumes the audience can’t handle too much, so instead of drama, it is really close to melodrama . Instead of mystery, it is very close to a parody of a mystery. Instead of historical characters, it traffics in some kind of caricature. This is what happens when a play tries to be everything to everyone. It cannot be done—you have “lean in” to the elements that work, even if that means giving something up.
